Job Description

The Emergency Operations Department is responsible for the overall emergency management of the Simpcw Community, and it includes the Chu Chua Volunteer Fire Department, First Responders, and Indigenous Initial Attack Crews.

Nature & Scope of Work:

Simpcw is looking for to add experienced Wildland Fire Fightersto the organization’s growing Emergency Operations Department. This is a full-time seasonal position. With offices located in Chu Chua, the successful candidates will take direction from their designated Crew Leader and be responsible for on the ground wildfire suppression. During periods of non-deployment, the fire crew will be expected to work on other Simpcw projects as directed by the IIA Coordinator. Other projects may include Wildfire Risk Reduction, timber development and/or silviculture projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Follow the direction of the designated crew leader.
  • Ensure that crew and job site are operating safely.
  • Ensure readiness for the assigned tasks.
  • Perform fire suppression methods and techniques as directed.
  • Communicate with other crew members and crew leader effectively.

Qualifications – all must be current and valid until Sept 30, 2023

  • · 18 years old minimum
  • · Completed the annual Par Q and You self screening questionnaire.
  • · S-100 Basic Fire Suppression and Safety or equivalent (annual re-currency)
  • · S-185 Fire Entrapment Avoidance
  • · WFX-Fit Test (Arduous Fit Test)

Assets (but not required) – please reference any of these assets in cover letter

  • Class 5 Drivers License with Clean Drivers Abstract
  • OFA Level 1 and Transportation Endorsement
  • Basic Chainsaw Operator Course completion
  • Certified Danger Tree Assessor (DTA) – Wildland Fire Safety Module
  • Post secondary forestry or resource management education (in progress or completed)
  • Previous wildland firefighting with a government agency
  • Forestry work experience (i.e., logging, planting, layout etc.)
  • Other resource-based work and experience (i.e., oil and gas, mining, farming)
  • Extensive outdoor and wilderness experience (i.e., trapping, fishing, hunting, back country activities)
  • Volunteer Fire Dept experience

Skills and Abilities

  • Physically fit and capable of physical labour. (Fitness test may be required)
  • Strong verbal and written communication
  • Capable of navigating rugged terrain.
  • Ability to carry heavy object (50 lbs) long distances over difficult terrain.
  • Able to work under high stress environment.
  • Capable of resolving jobsite and task related issues
  • Able to travel if necessary (LOA or camp will be provided)
  • GPS and/or compass back country navigation
  • Willingness to take on projects and responsibilities as they arrive.
  • Proven safety record and willingness to participate in a safety-first work culture.
  • Must be able to travel and work overtime in remote outdoor setting in a variety of conditions.
  • Able to work away from home as projects dictate.

Hours of Work

  • Minimum 8 hours per day up to 12 hours per day.
  • During deployment, up to 14 day shifts possible.
  • Overtime paid after 8 hours of work.

Job Types: Full-time, Seasonal

Salary: $25.00-$33.00 per hour
