Your significant contributions will assist in maintaining our momentum in advancing our research.


TCP has an immediate opening for a full-time Transgenic Technologist with weekend and stat holiday availability working 37.5 hours per week. Reporting to the Associate Director, Model Production Core (Transgenic Team) the incumbent will contribute to the production of genetically modified mouse models by preparing embryo donors and recipients, breeding, weaning, mouse colony management, and other technical assistance to support the operation of the Model Production Core. The work is conducted in a highly regulated environment according to Standard Operating Procedures.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Preparation of mouse embryo donors and recipients for transgenic services, including:
    • Selecting estrus stage in female mice
    • Checking copulation plugs for timed pregnancies
    • Intraperitoneal injection of hormones to superovulate embryo donors
  • Mouse identification and tissue biopsy
  • Maintenance of mouse colonies, including breeding and weaning
  • Data entry into databases and laboratory records
  • Caesarian section and cross-fostering neonate pups
  • Vasectomy
  • Preparing media and reagents
  • Mouse embryonic stem (ES) cell culture
  • Other duties as required

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Developmental Biology or related discipline or Veterinary Technician Diploma.
  • Experience with laboratory research animals.
  • Demonstrated experience as a self-motivated, responsible person, able to work in both as a member of a team and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated excellent English communication (both written and verbal), interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to learn new techniques, solve technical problems, and troubleshoot standard protocols.
  • Demonstrated excellent work ethic, professional attitude, and high standards for accuracy.
  • Demonstrated close attention to detail and ability to accurately follow protocols, document work, and record data.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and adapt to changes in schedules and priorities.
  • Available to work weekends and stat holidays.

Preferred

  • Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (CALAS) or working towards certification.
  • Familiarity with CCAC guidelines relevant to working with animals in research.
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture.
  • Experience with mammalian embryo manipulation, including microinjections and embryo transfer surgeries.
