Duties

As part of the United States Consulate in Calgary, the Strategic Communications Coordinator works under the direct supervision of the Economic/Political/Public Diplomacy (Econ/Pol/PD) Officer or Consul General (CG) designee, in coordination with the Country Public Affairs Officer in Ottawa. The position has no supervisory responsibilities. Monitors regional press and digital media coverage of issues of importance to the United States. Maintains Consulate digital properties (such as social media and website content, to include mobile platforms). Researches and analyzes audiences for Consulate digital properties; customizes and develops online engagement to promote Mission objectives. Coordinates closely with Public Engagement/Resource Coordinator to plan and implement messaging efforts in both traditional press outlets and social/digital media platforms in support of public outreach activities in the Calgary consular district of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Northwest Territories.


Responsible for Consulate engagement with regional publics including a variety of formats required for dissemination through online, traditional broadcast, and in-person channels. Develops and maintains extensive network of key contacts in traditional and non-traditional media and social media across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories. Creates visual and multimedia content including: video and audio material; storyboards; graphics; artwork; photos; photo galleries; and similar visual and multimedia products. Develops custom-produced digital projects in support of specific public engagement goals with target audiences (for example, video in support of specific policy initiatives).


Qualifications and Evaluations

Requirements:

EXPERIENCE: A minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience in a media outlet, think tank, university, NGO, international organization, foreign embassy, government office, corporation, or related entity is required, with responsibility for public relations, public affairs, journalism, communications, marketing, outreach events, press conferences, and other media interactions as significant parts of the job. Must have experience managing digital properties, and content creation in multimedia and traditional formats.


KNOWLEDGE: Comprehensive understanding of Canadian press/media institutions, the media environment and professional journalism standards and practices, as well as trends in audience preferences for information consumption (print, TV, radio, online), is required. Must have an understanding of communication trends in the region and internationally as they affect the information landscape and must be familiar with influence patterns in information flow. Knowledge of marketing techniques, market analysis, and audience analytics in Canada. Must understand the regional, demographic, ethnic, socioeconomic, cultural, and linguistic factors and the influence of religious, cultural, and educational institutions in shaping Canadian opinions and preferences. Must have strong online communications and analysis skills to identify and exploit engagement opportunities.

Education Requirements:

A university degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, International Relations, Political Science, Economics or related field is required.


Evaluations:

LANGUAGE: Fluent in speaking/reading/writing in English is required.
