THIS IS A TEMPORARY REPLACEMENT POSITION FOR A BARGAINING UNIT EMPLOYEE. Terms and condition of employment are as outlined in the Part-time Support Staff Collective Agreement

The Veterinary Technician program uses the licensed on-campus veterinary hospital as a major site for student lab activities in all semesters of the program. Live animals are housed during the academic year and the facility operates as a veterinary hospital (GCVH). Reporting to the Associate Dean the incumbent supports student learning activities, organizes the management of animal care, and oversees the maintenance and implementation of hospital routines and equipment to ensure all areas of GCVH are organized and maintained in a manner to support humane, safe and efficient handling, housing and treatment of animal patients. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Supporting student learning activities and practice sessions which includes:
    • Setting up supplies in the lab for student practice and other events as required
    • Facilitating student practice and reinforcing applied pre-learned principles related to skills / procedures by organizing and scheduling student practice sessions complete with mannequins, animal subjects and supplies
    • Collaborating with faculty to formulate a plan of action, and provide individual caching, to students struggling to demonstrate skill competency
    • Supporting students during patient sample collection and processing
    • Providing feedback to students and faculty in the form of skills evaluation lists

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successfully completed a two-year postsecondary Veterinary Technician diploma
  • Must possess, and maintain, current registration in good standing with the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT)
  • Five years experience as a Registered Veterinary Technician
  • Experience training and demonstrating skills to others
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health and safety rules and regulations
  • Computer skills and experience using the MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel) and the internet
  • Communication and interpersonal skills to provide clear concise information
  • Must be self-directed with the ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Demonstrated planning, coordinating and time management skills
  • Proven analytical, critical thinking, decision making, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position lifting equipment and larger animals up to 44 lbs., and over 44lbs (on occasion)
