Job Summary

The Manager, Machinery and Dimensional is responsible for developing the market and selling services for the dimensional, machinery and project cargo market. The incumbents’ objectives are to expand, support and execute innovative and practical transportation solutions that optimize the customer’s supply chain to deliver efficiency and productivity improvements. The major market niches are the wind industry, infrastructure projects, power generation, military, mining, and heavy vehicles.

Main Responsibilities

Solution Development, Growth, Sales, and Pricing

  • Understand customer’s end to end logistics requirements and their business challenges
  • Offer solutions to customers that meet supply chain needs factoring in the total cost to the customer, price, risk, and schedule requirements
  • Analyze CN Supply Chain solution options as well as compare potential alternative supply chains and offer options that are in the best interest of the customer and CN
  • Prepare and handle price proposals for customers shipping dimensional traffic
  • Develop relationships with Owners, engineering companies, freight forwarders, Ports, other railway companies and equipment suppliers to develop new business as well as to ensure the smooth coordination with CN Operations to meet their needs when executing service.
  • Provide financial forecasts in the designated market subgroup within the team
  • Seek growth opportunities through connections with Industry, Regional Economic Development, and other parties
  • Meet with customers to grow the organizations share with existing customers as well as identify and target new customers

Project Management and Customer Service

  • Lead the dimensional process for each move, from customer onboarding to execution and revenue collection, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders
  • Develop strong internal relationships with Business Development, Real Estate, Operations, Mechanical, Engineering, HiWide, Service Delivery, Regional Sales, Service Design and CN Transload to enable the planning and execution of customer projects
  • Oversee project execution for large rail moves, including unit trains

Intelligence Gathering

  • Gather and share competitive intelligence including pricing and how competitors go to market and share this intelligence with the Sales and Marketing teams and other CN Business Units
  • Develop and maintain competitive analysis database
  • Gather intelligence on new customer targets to support sales growth
  • Develop relationships with third party suppliers and other competitors in the local market and offer solutions in the trade lanes to gain intelligence and knowledge of the project and heavy lift marketplace
  • Represent CN and the team at industry conferences, including speaking to audiences

Rate Publications

  • Prepare and maintain macro-contracts
  • Prepare other rate authorities such as open tariffs and limited freight tariffs
  • Oversee price protections

Working Conditions

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The role requires being available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidents. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress. The role requires minimal travel (10%) across Canada and the United States (U.S.) to meet customers, attend conferences, meetings and training.

Requirements

Experience

Supply Chain or Logistics

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in supply chain or logistics in the project logistics, supply chain design and management, out of gauge cargo transportation, international logistics or supply chain business development field

o Experience in contract negotiation and high-value pricing

o Experience working with Customer Management Systems (CMS) and Transportation Management Systems (TMS)

Education/Certification/Designation

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Graduate Degree in Supply Chain Logistics, Engineering or Business*
  • Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset

  • Strong project management skills and ability to lead cross-functional projects
  • Knowledge of rail transportation, including rigging process, Open Top loading regulations, specialized heavy-duty railcar movement, dimensional clearance process to be able to develop rail-centric solutions
  • Knowledge of handling heavy and wide shipments
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Strong communication skills in verbal and written English
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Access*
  • French communication skills both verbal and written*
  • Any knowledge for any of the above would be considered as an asset
