Health Sciences North (HSN) is seeking an innovative leader for the position of Director, People, Safety & Development to be responsible for the advancement of the People, Safety and Development portfolio in alignment with the organizational strategic goals and program plans. Lead the day-to-day operations, providing management and leadership in all aspects including organizational and professional development, staffing, finance, strategic planning, talent management, and regulatory and compliance issues.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a Master’s Degree in Health Sciences, Business Administration, Health Administration or equivalent, from an accredited university. Candidates who possess and industry recognized professional designation(s) (i.e. Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Human Resource Leader (CHRL), etc.) are preferred. We are looking for someone with a minimum of five (5) years’ experience working in an academic health sciences centre or healthcare environment and a minimum of five (5) years’ experience working in a supervisor level position. Additionally, experience developing and implementing strategic plans, experience working with provincial acts, legislation, policies and procedures to achieve organizational compliance requirements and experience managing staff, recruitment, training, and employee relations is required.
Candidates that have experience working in Health and Safety, ideally in a health care environment, experience working with automated software applications and systems as well as experience working collaboratively within complex environment, with experience in leadership, organizational development, succession planning, talent management, wellness and recognition and regulatory and compliance programming is preferred.

KEY FUNCTION:
Responsible for the advancement of the People, Safety and Development portfolio in alignment with the organizational strategic goals and program plans. Lead the day-to-day operations, providing management and leadership in all aspects including organizational and professional development, staffing, finance, strategic planning, talent management, and regulatory and compliance issues.
REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Vice President, People Relations and Corporate Affairs.
DUTIES:
- Provide leadership, expertise and direction to the People, Safety and Development portfolio inclusive of Leadership and Learning and Occupational Health and Safety Service (OHSS).
- Engage, support and develop Our People by leading programs focused on health and safety, performance evaluation, succession planning, leadership development, wellness and engagement, staff retention and recognition initiatives.
- Advise Senior Leadership by providing extension professional assistance, management, leadership and recommendation on issues as required.
- Create transparent internal decision making systems fostering accountability, and enable staff to set priorities and monitor performance against key strategies and goals.
- Oversee the Health and Safety Management System and ensure all OHSS activities are compliant with applicable legislation, relevant regulations and that risk is managed.
- Provide leadership and guidance to the Joint Health & Safety Committee as required.
- Assume fiscal accountability of the departmental inclusive of developing and monitoring of the annual operations, budget, contracts and agreements.
- Ensure existing and proposed laws and regulations affecting the organization are implemented, communicated, and managed.
- Work collaboratively with members of Senior Leadership, Performance Leadership Committee and frontline clinical and non-clinical leadership to promote the HSN Talent Management System.
- Oversee the work of others in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), its regulations, and HSN policies.
- Provide hospital wide, on-call coverage for problems and serious issues after hours and on weekends according to scheduled rotation.
- Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
- Participate in the accreditation process and work to ensure that the program and HSN achieve, maintain and continually improve upon their accredited status.
- Teach, coach and lead staff in the development and monitoring of quality indicators and improvement initiatives.
- Engage in and foster professional development of all staff and provide opportunities for learning within budgeted resources.
- Ensure a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors; investigate report, debrief and take or direct corrective action as required on incidents.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders/organizations/community groups to achieve program objectives, integrate and link services and foster partnerships across the continuum of service delivery.
- Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
- Represent the department or division on various committees and in meetings as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Health Sciences, Business Administration, Health Administration or equivalent, from an accredited university.

- Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of five (5) years’ experience working in an academic health sciences centre or healthcare environment.
- Minimum of five (5) years’ experience working in a supervisor level position.
- Experience working in Health and Safety, ideally in a health care environment is preferred.
- Experience developing and implementing strategic plans is required.
