Job Description

Working with the respected internal stakeholders, the Corporate Lawyer is responsible for providing legal support relating to contracts, proposals, and subcontracts, along with general legal support in all other areas. This position reports directly to General Counsel.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Key responsibilities include the following:

  • Develop, review, audit and revise legal contracts including bid reviews and client, vendor and subcontractor contracts and agreements, ensuring corporate standards are met and business risk is minimized
  • Work with stakeholders to conduct contract reviews to ensure contract documents protect QM’s interest and position with respect to scope of work, terms and conditions, and schedules
  • Work with stakeholders to ensure client and QM obligations are clearly understood by QM management through bid review meetings and job kick off meetings
  • Liaise with stakeholders to ensure that all project guidelines are adhered to
  • Negotiate satisfactory resolution of conflicts or disputes related to contracts
  • Develop and ensure appropriate and efficient controls, systems and administration procedures for all agreements and commitments are executed
  • Advise on risk mitigation with respect to managing changes with respect to scope, terms and conditions, and schedule
  • Maintain accurate records of contracts, including revisions
  • Provide support, education, and guidance with contractual changes, issues, and obligations
  • Assist with other Corporate legal matters including employment, vendor agreements, leases, etc.
  • Establish strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Keep up to date with related trends and issues; make recommendations for continuous improvements related to contracts
  • Prepare summaries and reports
  • Perform legal research
  • Provide support to the General Counsel on wider portfolio
  • Other responsibilities as required and determined based on business needs

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND KEY COMPETENCIES

  • Eligible to practice law in Canada
  • A minimum of five (5) years of specialized experience with Canadian contract law, preferably in the construction or environmental industry
  • Exceptional overall communication skills, and superior writing skills (as required for preparing and proofing legal documents)
  • Legal research skills
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Analytical skills and the ability to make sound judgements
  • Strong attention to detail with a high level of accuracy
  • Highly organized, with strong time management skills
  • Personable; good interpersonal skills and a customer-service focus
  • Must be highly reliable and task-oriented
  • Self-motivated with a positive disposition
  • Ability to work well independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and build trusting relationships with team members

  • Flexibility to travel to other office locations

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is in the office. Local travel to other Corporate offices is required.
