- be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or have official refugee protection status, and be legally entitled to work in Canada
- be between the ages of 15 and 30
Qualifications:
- Interest in community development
- Ability to work well with management, board, staff, volunteers and others
- Ability to take direction well and to show initiative
- Experience working, studying, or collaborating with people from diverse cultures and economic backgrounds
- Gardening and/or permaculture experience an asset
- Familiarity with the Kitsilano neighbourhood and the Westside an asset
- Ability to occasionally lift moderately heavy to heavy items
Tasks and projects
Primary task: Helping maintain Village Vancouver collaborative community garden sites (i.e. general gardening tasks such as planting, watering, weeding, and mulching)
Tasks may also include
-Supervising garden volunteers
- Developing educational and promotional material for gardening efforts
- Writing seed, gardening, or other food related articles for the Village Vancouver (or a community partner) newsletter and blog
- Helping organize gardening workshops and activities Village Vancouver Summer Employment Opportunity
- Filling DIY planter kit orders
- Helping build raised beds
- Helping with Village Vancouver workshops and activities
- Tabling at Village Vancouver booths at street fairs, festivals, farmers markets, or other community gatherings
- Other seed, gardening, and general tasks as needed
Rate of pay: $17.70 per hour + 4% in lieu of vacation
Job duration and hours: Approximately 31 hours/week for 9 weeks (280 hours total), from May 14, 2023 to July 15, 2023. (Start and end dates may be adjusted.) Saturdays and Sundays, as well as some weekdays.
Location: Field House McBride Park (Kitsilano, Vancouver), VV community gardens/garden spaces, and remotely.
Accessibility: The Field House is not wheelchair accessible. Gardens have uneven surfaces. Kits Village garden is terraced.
