This competition will be used to fill two (2) seasonal positions, and one (1) casual position on a as, if, and when basis. The Cable Ferry Operator positions are recalled every year/season to work at the ferry.

Northern Airports and Marine Operations acts as the lifeline for remote communities in Northern Manitoba, allowing the transportation of medical patients and essential supplies such as food and medication. Marine Operations provides ferry services to the communities through a highly skilled workforce that adheres to regulatory standards to ensure safety and uniformity with provincial, federal, and international regulations.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must be willing to undergo Marine Emergency Duties, WHMIS, Confined Space Entry, and First Aid/CPR training (within 1st year, training provided).
  • Must be able to work in/over water and under adverse weather conditions. Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position.
  • Must have a valid Class 5I or 5F Driver's Licence
  • Must be able to work according to the ferry schedule. Must be able to work extended and irregular hours.
  • Must be able to travel within the province by air, ground and/or water.

Qualifications:

Essential

  • Experience operating and maintaining light and heavy duty equipment.
  • Experience with building maintenance.
  • Ability to display initiative.
  • Experience providing customer service.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt and learn new procedures.

Duties:

The Cable Ferry Operator provides seasonal twenty-four (24) hour public transportation (cable ferry service) in a safe and efficient manner. These positions are responsible to operate and perform routine maintenance of a cable ferry according to the schedule established by the department and in accordance with the federal and provincial regulations, policies, and guidelines to ensure the safe and effective operation of a provincial ferry in a remote northern community to service their emergency and everyday transportation needs.
